Welsh League: Kane Owen, Josh Brogden & Lamin Conteh named Players of the Year
Kane Owen, Josh Brogden and Lamin Conteh have been named Player of the Year in their respective divisions.
From Division One to Division Three, the respective managers in each division were given five votes.
The players with the most votes altogether would be named Player of the Year.
Welsh League Division One
It’s been a memorable season for Kane Owen. The former Cardiff City defender was named Penybont’s Players Player and Supporters Player of the Year, having gone the whole season unbeaten.
His efforts for the University of South Wales were also recognised as he won Player of the Year and Male Sports Person of the Year.
Owen was a clear favourite in the eyes of the Division One managers, with his nearest competition 32 points off him.
In second and third in the awards, was Undy Athletic’s Nathan Wood. The tricky winger has since joined Penybont for their first season in the Welsh Premier League.
Completing a Penybont sweep, defender Sam Rodon was joint-second with his teammate for next season. Rodon was part of the Penybont defence which shipped just 22 goals.
Welsh Football League Division Two
Nick Hyden, joint top goalscorer for Swansea University with Marley Bishop-Wisdom, was a close contender to Conteh. Only a few votes separated the two players and Hyden is unlucky to miss out on this occasion.
The central midfielder has been a pivotal part of Swansea’s success, both in the Welsh League and in the University set up.
In third is Marcus Jones, in what was a close race for third. Joey Evans, Marley-Bishop-Wisdom, Rameer Outlaw and Rhys Tandy were all level on the same points but Jones pipped by just the one.
Jones began the season with Welsh Premier League side Barry Town United, but having joined STM in November, the influential midfielder has been a nightmare for Division Two defences. He returns to the second tier of Welsh football, having previously been on the books of Taffs Well.
Welsh Football League Division Three
He may not have finished top goalscorer in the Division, but Penydarren’s Josh Brogden was pivotal in helping the Miners to a second consecutive promotion.
Brogden’s 19 league goals for Kerry Mullins’ side saw Penydarren pip Trefelin to the league title by a point. His performances up front for the Division Three title winners, has earned respect from managers from around the league.
Damon Thomas who finished top goalscorer in Division Three, despite playing predominantly in midfield, helped Richie Ryan’s men to promotion after heartbreak last year.
Thomas built up a number of relationships with the Trefelin attack, with the Port Talbot club just three goals shy of 100.
Brogden’s Penydarren teammate Christopher Colvin-Owen was third in the votes. Owen, most well known for being the key figure in their Welsh Cup run last season, has maintained his form at a higher level.
