South Wales Alliance League clubs Pontlottyn and Tynte Rovers fold

Pontlottyn and Tynte Rovers, two clubs of the South Wales Alliance League have announced that they have folded.

Two clubs, with more than half a decade of experience in the league each, have shut down.

It comes a week after Brecon Corries announced that they would be leaving South Wales to take part in the Mid Wales Leagues.

Caerphilly based Pontlottyn were relegated from the Premier Division last season. They had been playing in the Alliance League since 2012 and had been in the fifth tier for the last six years.

Last season, the club appointed one of the youngest managers in Welsh football in 26-year-old Joshua Evans.

He has since moved on from the club, tweeting of his departure in May: “As my first season in management comes to close I would like to thank Pontlottyn for the opportunity this year and everyone whose advised me and helped me out on and off pitch it’s been a blast.”

Pontlottyn came to within a game of the Welsh League, having lost a play-off final to STM Sports at the Cardiff City Stadium in 2015.

Former Welsh League club Tynte Rovers have also joined the scrap heap of South Wales Alliance League clubs.

The Mountain Ash club had been in the Alliance League for six years, spending all of the years in the seventh tier.

Tynte Rovers survived on the virtue of goal difference, finishing 18 goals ahead of Cardiff side St Josephs, who were relegated to the regional leagues.

A number of players had been playing for the club from the age of seven.

The club released an emotional statement, confirming the news:

“I regret to announce that Tynte Rovers FC is folding as of now..

“Everyone involved is gutted with the outcome of the AGM it’s been a long time coming with a lack of interest in committee members, lack of money in the club but most significantly, the lack of fully committed players within the club.”

Despite their withdrawal, it is unlikely that AFC Bargoed, Carnetown or St Josephs will receive a reprieve.

It is unsure whether AFC Butetown will receive a reprieve, due to Pontlottyn’s withdrawl.

Canton Rangers, Maesteg Park and Tata Steel United are all confirmed participants in the South Wales Alliance League next season, following their promotion.
