Kayne McLaggon scored twice to take his tally to three for the season as Barry Town United recorded victory over Aberystwyth Town at Jenner Park.
His first goal was outstanding, as he turned in the middle of the park to fire an unstoppable shot past Connor Roberts in Aberystwyth’s goals.
Clayton Green doubled the Linnets lead before McLaggon added even more gloss to put the game to bed, as the Linnets maintained their 100% record to start the season with a flourish.
Arnaldo Mendes pulled a goal back, and the visitors went in search for more goals, but to no avail; as the hosts ensured they made it two wins on the spin to start the season.
Both teams are now back in action on bank holiday Monday. Barry Town United host Bala Town; as Aberystwyth Town entertain JD Cymru Premier Champions, The New Saints.
Aberystwyth started the brighter at Jenner Park and had the first chance of the evening, as Wesley Baynes put in a wonderful cross, which found Matthew Jones, but his header was dealt with by George Ratcliffe in the Barry goal. He was making his second consecutive start following a loan move from Cardiff City in the summer.
But despite this, it was the hosts who took the lead on the fifth-minute mark; courtesy of a sublime strike from Kayne McLaggon, as he turned superbly and fired his shot into the top right-hand corner from outside the box, which sent the home faithful into raptures.
Gavin Chesterfield’s side grew in confidence following the opening goal; and had a fantastic chance to double their lead, following excellent link-up play between McLaggon and Thomas Fry – as the latter had his shot saved wonderfully by Connor Roberts.
In the same move, McLaggon was denied his second of the game when his effort was saved excellently at point-blank range by Roberts, as the hosts continued to press for a second goal following McLaggon’s sensational effort to give the hosts the lead.
McLaggon was causing the visitors all kinds of problems; as the colossal Arnaldo Mendes gave away a free-kick for a trip on the Barry forward – and from the resulting free-kick, summer signing Jack Compton had his effort saved by Roberts; who was having a fantastic game in goals for the Seasiders.
Barry didn’t have to wait long for their second goal, though. It was excellent work from Clayton Green, who burst through Aberystwyth’s back-line, to fire in a shot – which looked as though it was heading over the bar, but it, somehow, crept into the back of the net to give Chesterfield’s side a two-goal cushion heading in at the break.
Barry continued to create chances in the second half, too, as Kayne McLaggon had another chance to add to his tally, but Roberts was equal to his effort – before Fry had his strike cleared off the line.
Just moments later, the tenacious Chris Hugh – who missed last weekend’s game with Penybont fired just wide of the goals, as the Linnets continued to dominate against the Seasiders.
Mendes pulled a goal back for the visitors, and they push and probed for another goal which would have made the final few moments nervous for the hosts, but they couldn’t quite find a way through, as Barry held on for three points at Jenner Park.
