Cardiff Metropolitan 1-0 Airbus UK Broughton: Baker strike gives Archers narrow victory over winless Wingmakers
Cardiff Metropolitan edged out Airbus UK Broughton in a narrow affair at Cyncoed Campus.
Chris Baker scored the only goal in the Welsh capital as Cardiff Met made it nine home league wins out of nine. They also remain one of six teams, who have yet to taste defeat.
The hosts sit third in the league, behind on goals for, whilst Airbus sit bottom of the league, as the only team without a point.
Met made two changes, with Bradley Woolridge dropped from the squad entirely, allowing Joe Evans to make his first start for Cardiff Met, following his move from Cambrian & Clydach Vale. Kyle McCarthy came in for Eliot Evans, captaining the side.
Airbus were without Curtis Strong, who was red-carded in their 3-1 defeat to the Cefn Druids on Friday.
Stephen O’Shaughnessy’s men started the brightest of the two in humid conditions at Cyncoed Campus.
Having resumed from a drinks break though, the sting was taken out of the Wingmakers early pressure.
Stern words from manager Christian Edwards motivated Met to take the lead.
The Archers broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark. Chris Baker volleyed home into the bottom corner after a whipped in delivery from a corner-kick.
The game was dominated by Christian Edwards’ side for the remainder of the half with Mael Davies’s strike striking the outer right side of the post with the keeper left standing.
Met continued to pepper Dave Roberts goal as the hosts looked to added to Baker’s strike.
An audacious strike from Joel Edwards went inches above the crossbar which nearly saw a great second goal.
The first half was controlled by Met and the same could be said for the second half.
Kyle McCarthy’s free-kick met the head of Mael Davies who saw his header cannon off the crossbar.
Met thought they had struck a second as Mael Davies prodded the ball home but the linesman flagged his effort for offside.
Moving into the final half-hour, the game began to slow down, with bookings and substitutions affecting the flow of the game.
