Pencoed Athletic 5-2 Caerphilly Athletic: Five star performance puts Pencoed in pole position
A FIVE goal flurry from high-flying Pencoed Athletic has maintained their position at the top of the South Wales Alliance Premier Division for another week.
Ceiron Beer scored an impressive hat-trick for Pencoed after Jack Delve and Nathan Williams had opened the scoring for the hosts.
Gareth Tedstone was on target for Caerphilly in between Delve and Williams’ strikes, before Jordan Burnell added another goal for Caerphilly.
Pencoed went into the festive break on level points with newly-promoted Porthcawl Town Athletic but with two games in hand.
The arrival of Caerphilly Athletic to Felindre Road could have proved a tricky affair with the visitors welcoming a number of players back to their starting line-up.
Pencoed took an early lead through Nathan Williams before striker Jack Delve doubled the deficit on the half-hour mark. Caerphilly pulled one back just before the breakthrough Gareth Tedstone to set up a nervy few minutes ahead of the half time whistle.
Pencoed asserted their dominance in the second half, however. Mark Powell’s men took hold of the game in midfield and doubled their first-half tally with a brace from substitute Ceiron Beer.
Caerphilly pulled one back late on, Jordan Burnell rising at the far post to head home, but Beer wasn’t finished yet and he completed his hat-trick shortly before the whistle.
Pencoed have made no secret of their aspirations to join the Welsh League, and this latest result puts them in a commanding position in the Alliance’s top tier.
The club has already earmarked a site at Woodland Avenue, a few hundred metres to the west of the current ground, on which to build a facility compliant with Welsh League regulations.
The new ground will play host to Pencoed’s senior set-up as well as more than 15 youth teams that are affiliated to the club.
Elsewhere in the South Wales Alliance Premier, Porthcawl kept the pressure on Pencoed with an impressive 4-2 victory away to fellow high-flyers Cardiff Draconians.
The results move Pencoed and Porthcawl nine points ahead of third-placed Draconians.
