Taffs Well 0-3 Caerau Ely: Young Guns claim first league win

Caerau Ely claimed their first league win of the season after defeating Taffs Well at Rhiw’r Ddar. 

David Lyon was on target in both halves, having dispatched a penalty he had earned. Hywel Davies was also on target for the Young Guns.

Danny Hooper’s youthful outfit thoroughly deserved their victory having carved open an uncreative Taffs Well side.

Their first league victory sees them eleven points adrift of the safety and three points behind nearest placed Cwmamman.

Taffs Well – still in search of a new manager – named four new signings in their starting eleven.

Cael Jones and Thomas Gameson moved from Aberbargoed, Wales six-a-side international Akeem Cullen was also named in the squad. 

Former Cardiff City youngster Jac Davies was also included.

Ely boss Danny Hooper continued to exclude himself to focus on coaching and named Jack Harvey in the squad for the first time.

Caerau Ely took the lead after thirteen minutes when David Lyon’s spot-kick sent Wellmen debutant Cael Jones the wrong way after Lyon was fouled by Samual O’Sullivan.

Caerau were threatening in possession and were enjoying a positive start to affairs against their struggling hosts.

Jordan Carey had Taffs Well’s first meaningful opportunity though he shot over the bar from Richard French’s pass.

David Lyon almost doubled his tally as turned his shot over the bar.

The nippy Carey was getting half-opportunities but where he was able to get his shot away, Elliot Matthews was untroubled.

Scott Hayward didn’t take the two opportunities which fell to him from a corner-kick. The defender hitting one shot over the bar and then another low shot being blocked on the line.

Hywel Davies nodded Caerau further in front after Cael Jones had saved Ben Vincent’s header prompting a goalmouth scramble.

Taffs Well had a slumberous start to the first half and hadn’t recovered from Lyon’s opener as they trailed going into the break.

Lyon, who had put a clear stamp on the same, found Nathan Mathias outside the box however his shot agonisingly missed the target. 

Elliot Matthews continued to remain untested as the Wellmen continued in their fruitful manner.

Caerau Ely were firmly in the ascendancy at this point and they inflicted further damage, with Lyon weaving his way through the Well defence to rifle home his second.

Taffs Well had finally tested Matthews with Jordan Thomas forcing the young keeper to punch away however that was the only troubling effort for the hosts in the second half.

Caerau were able to see out the victory in what was a commanding performance from the league’s bottom side. 

The Wellmen’s torrid form continues having won just once in eight league games.
