Merthyr Town 2-0 Farnborough: Hill and Jones on target in win for Martyrs

Merthyr Town claimed their first win of 2020 by beating Farnborough 2-0 at Penydarren Park.

Two quick-fire goals in the first-half from Gethyn Hill and Owain Jones were enough to give the Martyrs the victory, with the Martyrs undeterred from Jones’s missed penalty in the second.

Merthyr move up to 11th after the victory as they played their first fixture in a fortnight after recent postponements against Truro City and Weston super-Mare. 


Merthyr started off brightly in the first few minutes with a chance from Gethyn Hill who headed it on to the bar after a well-worked attack down the left-hand side.

The hosts kept applying the pressure with a free-kick just outside the box in was headered just past the post by Ismail Yakubu, showing threating signs early on for Merthyr.

Farnborough began to make some promising attacks, but they were broken down in the final third

The game opened for Merthyr as they continued to apply the pressure after many parried shots from Liam Beach.

A low driven cross from Jamie Veale was scored by Gethyn Hill scored by Gethyn Hill, who slotted his effort into the bottom left to give Merthyr the lead.

Minutes later a similar goal was scored by Owain Jones in the 28th min, placing it past Beach as the attack came from the wing.

Having conceded twice in quick succession, Farnborough showed a real fighting spirit to get back into the game with their attacks but did not take their chances as Seth Owens’ header went narrowly over the bar

Merthyr continued into the second half on the front foot as Gethyn Hill gets pulled down in the box, the referee disagreed and gave a free kick to Farnborough.

Merthyr had the opportunity to further extend their lead but didn’t take it.

Ian Traylor was brought down in the box which gave Owain Jones a chance for a brace but it was Liam Beach parried it away which kept the score to two.

Gethyn Hill had a disallowed a goal for offside in the final ten minutes.

Farnborough created some late chances in the dying moments of the game but failed to turn it with Merthyr’s damage inflicted in the first-half proving enough for victory.
