Merthyr Town have issued a club statement following the recent exits of some players.

During the window, the Martyrs have lost three players to the Welsh pyramid system.

Club captain Ashley Evans joined Penybont, Kyle Patten moved to Barry Town United and long-serving forward Ryan Prosser joined second-tier Cambrian & Clydach Vale.

Fringe players such as Cameron Clarke and Tom Meechan have also joined the Welsh system.

“The playing budget had to be set at an affordable level, and sadly cannot compete with the Welsh Premier League – Club’s from which have taken players from us,” said a club statement from the Merthyr Town board.

“The budget remains the same and all monies from the ‘Boost the Budget’ initiative continue to be given to Gavin on a weekly basis.

“However some of the top-ups that were being received from third parties seem to be drying up.

“The Board will ensure that top-ups do not happen in the future because it has caused major headaches for the Board and Gavin.

“The Club continues to operate stable financially and we ask that everyone gets behind the club and the team, who are already proving that when we’re all together we can achieve great success.”

Merthyr Town are also hopeful that a recently established partnership with Cardiff City will see developmental players move to Penydarren Park.

The Martyrs have a partnership with Cardiff City which will see them become a development centre for Cardiff City, which will run concurrently with existing training sessions at their stadium.

“At some point and as part of the Club’s agreement with Cardiff City FC Academy, Gavin will have some development players at his disposal, which will go a long way in helping keep consistency on the field,” continued the Merthyr Town board.

“Furthermore, Gavin is currently looking for replacement players but will only replace if they can bring something to the team.”

Merthyr Town are currently 12th in the Southern League South and are thirteen points off of the play-off places.
