Wales could face a battle to keep hold of Liverpool starlet Neco Williams according to reports.

Williams qualifies for Wales due to being born in Wrexham but qualifies to play for England through his English grandparents.

Paul Simpson, manager of England’s U20 squad was at Anfield as he watched Williams set up Liverpool’s winner as his cross was headed in for an own goal by Ro-Shaun Williams.

Though another report from the Daily Mirror says that Ryan Giggs says Williams looks set to be called up to his side after his breakthrough this season.

Wales have Euro 2020 warm-up friendlies against Austria and the United States next month, which could present Williams with an opportunity for the senior side.

It could clash however with Wales Under-19’s UEFA Elite Round qualifying fixtures. 

Rob Edwards’ side Austria, Germany and Serbia from March 25 to March 31. Williams played in all three of their previous fixtures and was their top scorer. 

Speaking to the BBC, former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock said Williams is a player who could be considered for a senior call-up.

“There are players who play for Wales, who don’t play that much club football, because the quality they possess might be better than what’s already in the squad.

“I definitely think Neco could be one of those players.

“The big problem at Liverpool is that he’s got Trent Alexander-Arnold in front of him, who is arguably the best right-back in world football at the moment.”

“So for him to get some game time is very difficult and he’s finding it difficult to get on the bench.”
