Caernarfon Town playmaker Leo Smith has had his say on the difference in quality between the Vanarama National League and the JD Cymru Premier.
Smith’s form for Caernarfon Town this season, helping the Cofis to the Welsh Cup semi-final, has earned him a call up to Mark Jones’ 20-man Wales C squad.
After a successful loan period at Llandudno, Leo Smith arrived at The Oval on a permanent basis, signing from Vanarama National League club, Wrexham, where he made 20 appearances.
Having had experience of both the Vanarama National League and the JD Cymru Premier, Smith has been impressed with the standard of Wales’ top flight since his move.
Leo Smith said: “The difference in standard isn’t as big as people might say it is.”
“It’s just that most of the teams in the National League are full time. It’s a difference that way but footballing wise I think its fairly similar.”
20/24 teams who compete in the Vanarama National League are full-time, while The New Saints are the only full-time club in the JD Cymru Premier.
Smith also expressed his immense pride in being called up to Mark Jones’ squad.
He stated: “It’s a great feeling to be called up to the Wales C squad, as it would be to represent your country at any level or any sport. It’s a real proud moment.”
Caernarfon Town’s The Oval has been chosen to host the international fixture.
Smith is relishing the opportunity to play for his country at his home ground.
“To be playing at The Oval will be very special. Many supporters will be there with the Cofi Army plus all Welsh football fans.
“It should be a good test for the lads.
“We will come up against good young players from National league and below.
“It’s a game I’m looking forward to and I’m hoping to impress.”
