Ammanford: Cymru South club follows suit of Leyton Orient with FIFA tournament

Ammanford AFC have taken inspiration from Leyton Orient’s viral tweet organising an eSports competition for clubs in Welsh domestic football.
On Sunday 15th March Leyton Orient’s twitter account proposed a 64 team tournament, to be played on EA sports latest instalment of the FIFA franchise, FIFA 20.
However, they were soon overwhelmed with interest from clubs around the globe from Barnsley to Benfica, Morecambe to Marseille. The tournament was then expanded to 128 teams.
The rules were simple, the teams places in the tournament were selected on a first come first serve basis and each team may then nominate one representative for their club (whether this be a fan, a player or a professional eSports player).
The clubs must be on FIFA 20 for them to be able to enter and the first round draw will be held later this evening on the “O’s” twitter page.
With over 90 clubs already signed up for the Welsh League’s version by this morning, Ammanford AFC hope to see that doubled before entries close on the evening of the 18th March and the first round draw is scheduled for Thursday the 19th March.
The tournament will differ to Leyton Orient’s variation however as the Cymru Leagues aren’t on FIFA 20 and so a system for how each club competes will have to be devised.
Some of the teams showing interest include Caernarfon Town, Bangor City, Bangor 1876, Merthyr Town, Swansea University and Porthmadog FC.
This isn’t just fun and games though as each club will donate £10 entry into the competition. With £5 of it going towards NHS Wales, and the other £5 donated into a pot that will be claimed by the winning club’s local food bank.
With local businesses such as MESOA grooming products supplying the winners with prizes, Riley Sports with trophies, Picton Sports commemorative winners t-shirts, All Wales Sport a platform for the results and cash prizes (for the winning clubs) and Mark Hirons the graphics; it proves to be a great opportunity to raise some money for a good cause and to have some football related fun in these sparse times for sports.
