Twenty-year-old Dylan Powell appointed as Garw boss

Garw have appointed Dylan Powell as their new first-team manager.

He becomes one of the youngest managers in Welsh football, taking over the Bridgend club at the age of just 20.

Powell is an FAW C Licence holder and is working towards his B Licence.

Announcing the appointment in late June, Garw said: “We are pleased to welcome Dylan Powell as our new first-team manager.”

He is joining Garw from Pencoed Athletic, where he worked as a coach for the underage group sides, having been a mascot for the club himself.

Wishing their departing coach best in his future endeavours, Pencoed tweeted: “All at PABGC wish good luck to Dylan Powell, one of our senior coaches who is taking up a new challenge with local rivals  Garw.

“Dylan has been part of the coaching set for many years and has just finished with his latest group pf players taking them through to under 16.

Dylan is the son Mark Powell, the manager of Pencoed Athletic, the current holders of the South Wales Alliance League title.

The two will do battle in the division next season when the FAW gives permission for the campaign to start.

As previously mentioned, a result of Powell’s appointment is he becomes one of the youngest bosses of a senior side in Wales.

Only Caerwys boss Jordan Hadaway who was 18-years-old at the time can claim to be the youngest manager of a senior side in Wales.

Other youthful managers include Dave Webber, who managed Dolgellau Athletic as a 19-year-old whilst studying Human Geography at Aberystwyth University.

The youngest manager in top-flight football is current Flint Town United boss Niall McGuiness, who managed Rhyl in the Cymru Premier at the age of just 24.

With Dylan Powell keen to put his stamp on things, the club have followed FAW protocols and Powell has already undertaken his first training session.
