Bala’s clash with Standard Liege switched to an away tie

Bala Town’s Europa League clash with Standard Liege has been switched to an away tie.

The Lakesiders were drawn as the home side but with a fixture clash at the Cardiff City Stadium, it may have resulted in a venue change.

Bala’s decision to move to an away tie could be linked to Cardiff City’s involvement in the Carabao Cup.

Should Cardiff City defeat Northampton then their stadium could be unavailable should they be drawn at home in Round Two.

The Nomads have also secured Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground for their Europa League qualifier with Dinamo Tbilisi, leaving a a limited number of alternatives.

With a decision needed imminently from the UEFA, the only viable option will have been to have switched venue.

Round Two fixtures of the English League Cup are played on the 15 and 16 September, meaning the stadium would be unavailable for training prior to the game.

Standard Liege will instead host the second qualifying round match at the 27,500 capacity stadium Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

The fixture, however, will remain behind-closed-doors with only officials and media allowed at the match.

It means Bala will be playing at a ground which held three group stage matches in the EURO 2000.

The qualifier will take place on Thursday, 17 September with a 19:00 GMT kick-off.
