Goals from Mael Davies and Sam Snaith give Penybont their second win of the season.

Kostya Georgievsky was brought down on the edge of the box in the fifth minute with a free-kick being awarded by the referee.

From the free-kick, Mael Davies set the ball off to Nathan Wood whose shot was deflected for a corner.

Right-back Connor Davies started lively as he created a few chances early on, but Penybont failed to convert.

The opening goal came from Nick Rushton who scored his fourth goal of the season against the run of play. A cross from left-back Jack Kelly found the attacker whose strike beat Ashley Morris.

Penybont reacted well as they had a chance of their own in the 30th minute. Davies found space again on the right-hand-side before his cross flew across the face of the goal, but nobody reacted to convert.

Two minutes later, Bont had a penalty claim as Lewis Clutton seemed to have been brought down in the box by David Jones. The referee denied the contact and booked the attacker for diving.

The hosts almost equalised in the 36th minute as Kostya Georgievsky’s looping header almost caught Jones out but the header went just over the crossbar.

Newtown had a chance of their own when Jack Kelly found Jamie Breese in the box. The striker almost extended their lead but his header also went just over the crossbar.

Rhys Griffiths’ team-talk seemed to work for Penybont who came flying out of the blocks at the start of the second half.

It only took four minutes for the hosts to equalise as an Oliver Dalton cross was met by a sublime back-heel flick from Mael Davies which beat goalkeeper David Jones.

Mael Davies came close to doubling his tally in the 57th minute as he saw Jones off his line and attempted to loft the ball over his head. The goalkeeper reacted fantastically before dramatically tipping the ball over the crossbar for a corner.

From the resulting corner, Daniel Jefferies had a headed attempt cleared off the line as he also came close to giving his side the lead.

Penybont finally went in front through substitute Sam Snaith. Similarly to the first goal, the second came from an extremely well delivered cross from Oliver Dalton before being smashed home by Snaith in the 65th minute.

The hosts almost increased their lead in the 78th minute as Sam Snaith rounded the goalkeeper but took the ball too far left to shoot. He came back on himself before crossing to Georgievsky whose shot went over the crossbar.

Davies almost doubled his tally again just two minutes later as his shot from the edge of the box tested Jones who got to the floor quickly to save.

Despite increased pressure from the visitors in the dying moments of the game, Newtown failed to equalise as they couldn’t build on their midweek triumph.
