Barry Town United 1-0 Cardiff Metropolitan: David Cotterill scores sublime free-kick as Linnets make it five wins in a row

David Cotterill

Former Wales international David Cotterill scored a sensational free-kick as Barry Town United won their fifth game on the spin.

In what was a professional display from the hosts, Cotterill’s wonder strike was the difference between the two sides.

The win means that Barry remain third, with both Connah’s Quay Nomads and The New Saints winning on the night.

The Archers, on the other hand, remain rooted to the bottom end of the table, in 10th position, four points above bottom-placed Cefn Druids.

Barry will now travel to Latham Park to face-off against Newtown. Cardiff Met host league leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads at Cyncoed Campus.

It was a positive start to the game from the visitors, with Liam Warman looking dangerous down the right-hand side and his teasing cross was put behind for an early corner for the Archers.

Barry steadily started to grow into the game and had a chance of their own, when Curtis Jemmett-Hutson crossed from the left-hand side, into the area, in what was a delightful ball – but Nathaniel Jarvis put his header just over the bar.

The winger, however, appeared to be offside and the goal wouldn’t have counted if it had found the back of the net.

Met then went up the other end and created a chance of their own. Striker Harry Warwick broke free, but his effort was saved excellently by Mike Lewis in Barry’s goal.

In what was an even contest, David Cotterill fizzed his effort just wide of the mark following a free-kick in a dangerous area for the hosts.

Barry were beginning to take control of possession a little bit more and Chris Hugh was looking lively down the left-hand side, but his cross was dealt with by the Met defence, as they remained stubborn, continuing to frustrate the hosts in the first-half.

Gavin Chesterfield’s side were now looking the better of the two sides and Chris Hugh saw his effort saved brilliantly by Will Fuller, before Jarvis saw the rebound cleared off the line.

Barry started the second-half with high intensity and Kayne McLaggon had a glorious chance to put the hosts in front, but he fired his effort straight at Fuller.

Cotterill then rolled back the years, finding the top corner from a free-kick to give the Linnets the lead in sublime fashion, which was the midfielder’s second goal of the campaign.

Met tried to push for an equaliser, but to not avail and Jemmett-Hutson may have added to the hosts lead, but he was off balance and ultimately fired well wide.

It didn’t matter, though, as the Linnets continued their superb form to win again in the JD Cymru Premier League.
