What we learned from Wales’ 4-0 dispatch of the Faroe Islands

Jayne Ludlow’s side increased their gap at second-place in their Euro 2021 qualifying group with a resounding four-goal win.

Helen Ward, Natasha Harding and Lily Woodham were all on target for the hosts as they step closer to Euro 2021 qualification.

Chance creation not an issue for Wales

Ludlow’s side created a plethora of chances throughout the game and were unfortunate to go into half-time only 1-0 up.

Jess Fishlock was pivotal in the hosts’ attack in the first half as her quick-feet and passing ability helped her provide for her teammates; as seen by her assist for the opener.

Wales continued to create chances right through until the death as the margin could have been greater.

Visitors up for the fight

Despite coming into the game bottom of the group having lost every game in the campaign so far, the Faroe Islands held their own and were adamant not to be pushed over.

The away side defended well in the first half and battled hard throughout the 90 minutes.

The side who lost by a 13-goal margin to Norway earlier in the campaign definitely have positives to take back to the Faroe Islands.

Full-backs impressive

Right-back Rhiannon Roberts and left-back Gemma Evans played fundamental parts in Wales’ win.

Roberts assisted twice in the second-half as her delivery proved to be clinical.

Evans’ energy helped her cause havoc to the Faroe Island defence. Particularly in the first-half, Evans was unlucky not to grab a few assists as she had an array of created chances missed by her teammates.

Harding making the difference

Picking a single stand-out player would be difficult but Natasha Harding’s brace either side of the hour-mark killed the away sides’ hopes.

Her first came from her quick reactions as she collected a loose ball in the box and fired low past the goalkeeper while her second came from a header at the back post.

Harding netted a hattrick in the reverse fixture showing her goals are vital for Wales.
