Wales’ Sophie Ingle nominated for prestigious Puskás award

Wales defender Sophie Ingle has been shortlisted for the FIFA Puskás Award for her superb goal against Arsenal in the WSL. 

The 29-year-old Chelsea defender, who can also play in midfield cracked a brilliant half-volley from the edge of the box to seal her side’s third in a 4-1 victory over Arsenal.

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes said after the game, “I don’t know what Sophie had for breakfast this morning. I’ve never seen her hit a goal like that in training, ever.”

Ingle joins Hal Robson-Kanu and Gareth Bale in the list of Welsh players to be nominated in the last ten years. 

Also nominated for the award are Shirley Cruz, Georgian De Arrascaeta, Jordan Flores, André Pierre-Gignac, Zlatko Junuzović, Hlompho Kekana, Heung-min Son, Leonel Quiñónez, Luis Suárez and Caroline Weir.
