Haverfordwest County 2-0 Aberystwyth: Double act Williams and Wilson provide spark for Bluebirds

Danny Williams and Jack Wilson lit up the Bridge Meadow as Haverfordwest County defeated Aberystwyth Town 2-0 at the Bridge Meadow.

The Bluebirds secured their first home win of the season thanks to goals from their inform forward and with it moved into the top five.

Things didn’t run smoothly however in West Wales, as there was plenty of drama throughout the evening with the game almost not playing to a conclusion.

Firstly there was a considerable delay in the first-half due to floodlight failure before fourth official Alex McInch had to replace referee David Morgan due to an injury in the second period.

With the defeat, Gavin Allen’s side remain without a win since the restart and move further away from a Europa League play-off top six spot.

The opening goal came from Jack Wilson, the speedster ran through the Aber defence, holding off the challenge of Louis Gerrard to beat Connor Roberts from fifteen yards.

Wilson had latched onto a cushioned header from Ben Fawcett with the pair interchanging positions in the first-half with Dan Williams.

Wilson’s stature is growing and he confidently put his side ahead.

Just before the half-hour, the floodlight unit failed the game, which had shown plenty of spark needed the arrival of Simon Morgan of SHM electrics to reignite the game.

When it did recommence after a delay it was somewhat subdued as players warmed up with the game being played and against the run of play the home side stretched their lead to 2-0 at half time.

Cardiff City loanee Dan Williams found himself unmarked at the far post as a Wilson cross was head on by Sean Pemberton for the free header from Williams, who looks likes he’s not suffering any long-term side effects of his Covid absence of recent weeks.

Aber played some controlled football on a beautiful surface, striker Steff Davies having the best of the opportunities as he battled for supremacy with Pemberton, the veteran at the back for the Bluebirds a presence which is bordering on being irreplaceable for his manager Wayne Jones

The second half was a more even affair, substitute John Evans and Davies creating chances and Jamie Veale featuring in places. Wilson had a great chance to score his second of the night, running through thirty five yards, Connor Roberts saving bravely before referee David Morgan added to the drama as he left with a groin strain to be replaced by Alex McInch, at the same time as Gwion Owen gave way to Adam Davies in the final visitors substitution.

Haverfordwest fully deserved their win, with many players standing up as 112 First Aid man of the match and despite the offensive play, centre half Scott Tancock takes the plaudits for a performance where he didn’t put a foot wrong all night. In an evening which saw a replacement referee the talking point was the recently installed floodlights courtesy of an FAW grant, which are not working fully: problems within the electrical unit meant the restart did see the game played without all the Lux bulbs featuring, but it was not something to take the brightness off the game which was a fine advert for the JD Cymru Premier.

Haverfordwest County: Wojciech Gajda, Daniel Summerfield, Tristan Jones, Sean Pemberton, Scott Tancock, Ricky Watts, Ben Fawcett, Jack Wilson, Kurtis Rees, Elliot Scotcher, Danny Williams.

Aberystwyth Town: Connor Roberts, Louis Bradford, Lee Jenkins, Mathew Jones, Jamie Veale, Steff Davies, Gwion Owen, Steven Hewitt, Owain Jones, Louis Gerrard.
