Key talking points as Cardiff Met defeat Newtown at Cyncoed Campus

Christian Edwards’ Cardiff Met defeated Newtown 2-1 at home on Tuesday night.

The game started with immense intensity, with all three goals coming in the first 10 minutes.

For the hosts, the win means they are level on points with sixth-placed Penybont – albeit the latter have played two games less than the Archers.

The loss means Newtown remain in 10th spot, just a single point above 11th-placed Flint Town.

Robins away day woes continue

Chris Hughes’ side are still yet to win on the road this season.

The Robins have picked up only two points away from home so far meaning they have the worst away record in the league.

Furthermore, the loss means Newtown continue their losing streak at Cyncoed Campus. They’ve never won away to Cardiff Met since the Students were promoted in 2016.

Class is permanent

An all-round fantastic performance from talisman Eliot Evans inspired his team to go on and win the game.

The attacker scored from a free-kick in the opening stages as well as scoring what became the winning goal in the 10th minute with a well-struck volley on his weaker left foot.

Evans also led from the front, with his leadership guiding youthful teammates.

The goals ended a nine-game dry spell for the 29-year-old, having not scored since the opening weekend.

Rushton quality as always

Despite not getting on the score sheet, Newtown’s Nick Rushton had plenty of positives to take from the game.

Always a handful for defenders, the attacker is the Robins’ top scorer so far this season.

He gave the Met defence something to worry about throughout, almost forcing an own-goal out of Rhydian Morgan with a dangerous cross in the first half.

Warman recovered his form

Liam Warman has been somewhat quiet for his standards in recent weeks.

Last night, however, we saw the winger produce a stellar performance similar to that of the start of the season.

Always the quickest man on the field, Warman showcased his technical ability with a delicate first touch and multiple mazy dribbles.

He was denied of a tidy assist when he dribbled fantastically on the right-hand side before finding Evans in the box whose shot was saved.

For a large period of the second half, Met were using Warman’s pace on the break to great effect.
