Pontypridd Town 2-0 Cwmbrân Celtic: Ellis and Gullick on target as Dragons progress

Pontypridd Town defeated Cwmbrân Celtic 2-0 at the USW Sport Park to progress in the Nathaniel MG Cup.

Goals from Aiden Lewis and Luke Gullick in either half gave the Dragons victory in their first competitive game in nine months. 

It was a very convincing performance from Pontypridd with the whole attacking line for The Dragons creating a number of problems of the Cwmbran defence.

Gullick, who scored Pontypridd’s second goal was the deserved Man of the Match, due to his ability to lead the line well in addition to his defensive work.

Pontypridd’s opening goal came from a moment of magic from influential midfielde Lewis. The Pontypridd stalwart took a swinging shot from outside the box

He swung his effort from distance into the bottom left corner leaving the keeper standing there on disbelief after the Cwmbran defence failed to clear.

The second goal scored by the star striker Luke Gullick as he takes a shot from distance to beat Watkins with a powerful shot to double the lead for the hosts which all but secured the game for the hosts due to the amount of chances for the home side.

It was a fairly contested match at the start with chances happening for both sides but as the game dragged on Pontypridd kept pushing with counter attacks troubling the Cwmbran defence.

Drew Fahiya and Tyrelle Webbe were both sprinting down both flanks as The Dragons kept pressuring in both halves to fight for a win.

Cwmbran had a few big chances but great saves from Davies was there to deny The Celts from any chance of going through. Two big chances were missed for the side as Meechan approached the goal and didn’t decide to take a shot at goal in a dangerous area.

The next big chance was from a quick free kick that down the right wing the ball being cut back and passed to just inside the box from the a Cwmbran midfielder as Davies saves well to his bottom corner.

Cwmbran opted to go with crosses on most of their attacks comped to Pontypridd with the counter attacks, two similar styles of play was on show from the sides but it was the Pontypridd side that were dominant.
