Conwy Borough 0-2 Ruthin Town: Winning start for Hudson as Ruthin progress in Cup

Ruthin Town defeated Conwy Borough 2-0 at Y Morfa Stadum to progress to the next round of the Nathaniel MG Cup.

Goals from Jamie Cumming and Josh Jones in either half ensured a winning start for Phil Hudson, who was taking charge of his first competitive game.

The result however means defeat for Matthew Jones, who was also making his debut in the dugout for Conwy Borough.

Each side were playing their first game in nine months following Sports Wales’ decision to grant the Cymru North ‘elite’ status.

Ruthin had plenty of the ball early on as they tried to impose themselves onto the game. They almost broke the deadlock when Matthew Hill hit the post.

Both teams had opportunities but Ruthin were more dangerous, meanwhile Conwy were getting in some dangerous positions but they couldn’t display the end product.

Ruthin’s route on goal was coming through mistakes from the Conwy players but they were unable to add to Hill’s earlier chance.

They did however take the lead from Jamie Cumming who scored a wonder-strike from 30 yards to lighten up the game.

Ruthin remained unchallenged from that goal and were able to take the one-goal advantage into the break.

Any chance of a fightback after remerging from the dressing rooms were hampered as Ruthin struck early into the second-half. Josh Jones finished off in the box after a scramble between the Ruthin attack and Conwy defence.

The game was able to settle down from Davies’ goal but it became sloppy and both sides were having to slug it out with some reckless yellow cards.

Conwy did have two penalty shouts to get back into the match but the referee waved away the protests.
