Barry Town United swoop for former Bristol Rovers starlet Kavanagh

Barry Town United have added forward Rhys Kavanagh to their squad.

The 22-year-old has resumed his playing career after initially retiring in July 2020 due to a reoccurring injury.

Kavanagh however has decided to restart his career by joining the Cymru Premier outfit, becoming their second signing this week following the addition of Lee Idzi.

In the early stages of his career, he was an academy product of Newport County, helping their Under-18s side to success, by scoring 28 goals in 32 appearances.

His performances for Newport earned him a move to Bristol Rovers in which he signed a professional contract, playing for their development side.

During his time at the Memorial Ground, he would spend loan spells at Bath City, Gloucester City and Hungerford Town.

“I’m buzzing to get back at it, looking forward to the rest of the season,” said Kavanagh in a social media post on his move to Jenner Park.

Commenting on his latest signing, manager Gavin Chesterfield said: “Rhys is an exciting player that I’ve known about for a long time.

“We feel like we could be a good match for each other and I’m excited to see what he can do. He knows many of our current squad and he’ll add a different attacking dimension to us.”
