Leon Britton moves to Ammanford in major coup for Cymru South side

Ammanford have secured a major coup after recruiting Swansea City legend Leon Britton for the upcoming season.

The 38-year-old will link up with Ammanford for a truncated JD Cymru South season, in which the campaign has been reduced to 15 games, owing to the pandemic.

Ammanford are due to start the season against Risca United, meaning Britton could don the colours of the club for the first time on March 20, should Welsh Government restrictions allow.

He had initially called time on his playing career at the end of the 2017/18 season, a campaign in which he had even managed the Swans for during his brief stint as caretaker manager.

However he was persuaded to join Llanelli Town in January 2019 but an injury saw him make just two appearances for the Reds.

He had held various roles with the club since his retirement, such as football advisor and then sporting director.

Britton played a part in the appointment of Steve Cooper, who formerly played for Bangor City and various other Welsh domestic sides.

He will now don the boots again though in the hope of securing a first promotion to the Welsh top flight for Ammanford.

Britton, who is regarded as a club legend at the Liberty Stadium initially joined the Swans in 2002 on a loan from West Ham United but made the move a permanent one at the end of the season.

The midfielder went on to make over 500 appearances for the Welsh outfit either side of a six-month spell at Sheffield United.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be signing for the club,” said Britton upon signing for the Carmarthenshire outfit.

“I can’t wait to get the boots back on and put this shirt on. I can’t wait to play for the Black and White Army.”

He will reunite with former Swansea teammates Andy Robinson and Lee Trundle, who had already spent a season together at The Recreation Ground.
