The lowdown on the rising star of Rubin Colwill

Rubin Colwill is a name that is gathering an ever-growing aura of excitement within the Blue side of South Wales and with good reason.

A member of the Bluebirds academy since the tender age of eight, Colwill has rose through the ranks to emerge as one of the Welsh Capital’s finest young talents. Now, it seems a transition into the rigours of first team football is within touching distance for the highly-regarded prospect.

Already, many would stake a well-balanced claim that Colwill possesses the physical attributes to thrive in the senior game. Blessed with a towering presence that earmarks the eighteen year old amongst his comrades in the youth system, this natural physicality makes Colwill a laborious proposition to rob of possession.

With match intelligence beyond his youthful years, the academy star is very effective in his ability to shield the ball from opposition players. Accompanying this is Colwill’s mechanistic desire to embark on powerful drives into the final third, an action which so often proves immensely difficult to prevent.

Possessing an instinctive eye for a killer pass, Colwill can impressively combine a nature of industry and tenacity with a destructive unleashing of creativity.

Across his enthralling exploits for Cardiff City’s various youth teams, the all-action midfielder has materialised his prodigious profile as a dictator of play- knowing when to burst forward, when to slow down the tempo and when to speed it back up.

Clutching such impressive decision-making skills will only bode well in the future for Colwill. After all, the ability to consistently craft the right choices is a power thoroughly craved for in senior football.

Encouragingly, the Welshman also has experience on the International front, previously representing Wales at U17 level.

Colwill already has a competitive game under his belt too. In December, he was part of the Bluebirds’ side which claimed a 2-0 win over Taffs Well in the Nathaniel MG Cup.

He didn’t score in the match but consistently drove forward to make things happen, controlling the midfielder and earned an assist for his efforts.

It seems, Colwill’s expertise has ignited the interest and approval from Cardiff City supporters. In what has been an otherwise cumbersome campaign for the Bluebirds, the blossoming of the talented teen is something of a rare beacon of light in the Welsh Capital.

And in the wake of his dazzling display to help Steve Morison’s young guns to a 4-0 victory over Ipswich Town, those who tuned in were rightfully expressive on just how captivating Colwill was.

But it is not just the Cardiff City faithful who have been awestruck by the attacking midfielder’s stellar showings.

Named in the match-day squad for the first time in his fledgling career as the Bluebirds claimed a 1-1 draw at home to Millwall, City head coach Mick McCarthy was only full of praise towards Colwill.

“I watched him with the residual from the squad on Wednesday when he trained on Thursday and wow” stated McCarthy.

“He stood out like a sore thumb. He’s a really good presence. A big, powerful lad. But technically very good” the boss added.

“And he looks like a bloke! I said to him today ‘you’ll be a big lad when you grow up’. He’s like a fella in the dressing room.

“Then he trained with us again on Friday because I wanted to see him again. And again, he handled it no problem.

“I like him.”

More recently, Cardiff have painted a performed philosophy of bridging the gap between youth football and the first team. Subsequently, this direction has facilitated the surfacing of Joel Bagan and Mark Harris, both of whom have appeared and impressed on the seniors.

Should his promising ascent continue, it only seems a matter of time before Rubin Colwill is strutting his stuff for Mick McCarthy’s men.
