Cyncoed Ladies 1-1 Abergavenny Women – Point apiece in entertaining battle

Cyncoed Ladies and Abergavenny Women could not be separated as the two played to a 1-1 draw at the USW Sport Park. 

Substitute Ffion David’s second-half strike was cancelled out by fellow replacement Monet Legall’s late equaliser. 

In a fast-paced, end-to-end contest, both sides could have claimed a victory, but will have to settled for a well-earned point.

A draw sees Abergavenny remain third in the Welsh Premier Women’s League table, while Cyncoed stay in fourth.

The game sparked into life immediately as both sides started at a very high tempo, with the first chance falling to Cyncoed’s Ellie Gunney, who fired into the arms of Zara Pernalete.

Visitors Abergavenny settled into the contest and had an increased amount of possession, but the Mighty Oaks’ defence was resolute. 

Mitchell’s side looked to break on the counter-attack and it almost paid dividends, as Gunney played a great ball through to Alison Witts, who was narrowly beaten to the ball. 

Another chance fell for Cyncoed with Witts again involved. The striker was played through well by the lively Rhianne Oakley but was caught narrowly offside. 

Craig Morgan-Hill’s Abergavenny side looked comfortable in possession and played at a fast pace throughout the first period, but failed to call Maisie Jones into action. 

As both sides went into the break goalless, it was an entertaining, fast-paced first-half.

The start of the second-half followed much of the same pattern as the first as both sides attacked at pace. 

Cyncoed winger Oakley’s positive run and cross found Witts in the box, but the striker was crowded out by a strong Abergavenny defence. 

In a positive spell for the hosts, Millie Jones squared to Witts on the edge of the box, whose effort at goal was saved superbly by Pernalete. 

From the resulting corner, a huge chance fell to captain Holly Broad, but the defender headed narrowly over.

Despite both sides having played on Sunday, neither side showed any signs of fatigue, as the game continued at its high tempo. 

After positive attacks from both sides, the deadlock was finally broken with just under a quarter of the match remaining.

Substitute Ffion David found space in the Cyncoed half to lift the ball over Maisie Jones, as the opening goal came for Abergavenny. 

Cyncoed responded well and looked for an immediate reply, as an equalising goal came for the Mighty Oaks six minutes from time.  

Substitute Monet Legall was found on the right to finish off an intricate move and level the scoring. 

Despite both sides’ best efforts to find a late winner, the points were shared at the USW Sports Park.

The Mighty Oaks remain unbeaten under new manager Charlie Mitchell, who began his tenure with a victory on Sunday meanwhile the pennies earn a point after a shock defeat to Aberystwyth.

Abergavenny travel to face Cardiff Metropolitan on Sunday in a huge game for both sides, while Cyncoed face league-leaders Swansea City.
