Montgomery Town have announced that they have withdrawn from the Ardal Leagues.

The Powys-based side had been admitted to the North East League, however the cancellation of the 2020/21 season has affected the club.

A number of players have moved across the border in England, leaving the squad short on numbers.

Other players have also notified the club of their unavailability as they prioritise their family lives following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In June 2020, first-team manager Luke Williams stood down from his role.

Withdrawl from Welsh football’s third tier is likely to result in a second demotion to the fifth tier.

In a statement issued by the club explaining their decision, it read: “This leaves us with a squad generally made up of young players who we have encouraged for some time to be part of our club, but we feel that should they experience a football which they are not prepared for and constantly experiencing defeat, their enthusiasm for the game will quickly erode.

“We fully understand that by resigning that we are now very likely to be playing at tier five level and we are confident that we can compete and be successful in the not too distant future and progress back up the pyramid system.

“It is with regret that we find ourselves having to compile this letter but these exceptionally difficult times that we have experienced over the past year and are continuing to experience, has contributed greatly to our current predicament but we are adamant that we keep football alive and kicking in Montgomery.”

The National Game Board will now be tasked with whether to fill the vacancy will be filled for the 2021/22 season, following the gap in the league.

A total of 22 clubs from Tier Four have applied for a Tier Three licence, despite the curtailment of the season.
