Aberystwyth Town 1-1 Penybont: Honours even in one-sided draw at Park Avenue

Honours were shared at Park Avenue this afternoon thanks to goals from Harry Franklin and Mael Davies

Although Penybont were the more dominant side in the starting moments of the match, the first 25 minutes were quite uneventful. The closest either team came to scoring in this time was in the 23rd minute as Lewis Clutton’s cross which was aimed at Aber turned Penybont man Kane Owen was collected easily by Connor Roberts in goal.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 33rd minute as last week’s goalscoring hero Harry Franklin calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Ashley Morris after a good run to get past the Bont defence.

Bont reacted well to the opening goal and created a few chances as they attempted to find an equaliser. Mael Davies and Kane Owen from a free kick attempted to level it, whilst Sam Snaith’s shot which did end up in the net was judged to be offside with not much protest from the away side.

Another chance came for Bont just before the half time whistle as tricky winger Kostya Georgievsky cuts it back to Harling who’s shot goes wide of the post.

Penybont started the second half as they did they first as they gave Aber as little opportunity to get the ball as possible. Mael Davies was taken down in the box which prompted penalty appeals from the away side but the referee was quick to dismiss them.

A golden chance for Aberystwyth to double their lead came when Mathew Jones’ corner found Lee Jenkins as the back post, but the young defender’s shot hit the outside of the bar.

Not long after, the away side finally got a deserved equaliser thanks to Mael Davies who found space in the box and slotted past Connor Roberts.

Box sides created chance after chance but neither were able to get another goal and the honours were shared on the West Wales coast

A win would have secured Penybont’s place on the Championship Conference, but they must now battle it out for their place next week as they host fellow top six hopefuls Haverfordwest County, meanwhile Aberystwyth welcome bottom of the league Cefn Druids to Park Avenue next Friday.
