Penybont sealed a top six finish in the Cymru Premier with a 2-0 win over Haverfordwest County. On a sunny evening goals from Sam Snaith and Mael Davies secured Penybont’s place in the top half.
Haverfordwest lost goal keeper Matthew Turner to injury in the first half and were restricted to half chances in a completive game.
The Bluebirds are eight points clear of eighth placed Aberystwyth Town in seventh. They will not be playing for a Europa League Play-off spot due having not applied for a UEFA License.
Here are five talking points from the game at SDM Glass Stadium.
Mael Davies Stunner
Mael Davies scored Penybont’s second with a stunning long range strike into the bottom corner of Wojciech Gajda’s goal.
Davies finished off a move which saw Penybont move the ball up and across the pitch with quick interplay.
The finish was the icing on the cake for Penybont after some great football which speaks of the quality of the league.
The Sam Snaith Show
Sam Snaith was one of many Penybont players who put in a quality performance.
Scoring a first half header, connecting with Kane Owen’s cross. Owen was looking to put the ball to Snaith throughout the game.
The goal he scored came from his desire to rise above his opponents and heading down into the ground left the keeper with on chance.
Nasty Fall
Haverfordwest keeper Matthew Turner was forced to leave the game after 35 minutes. Clashing with Kane Owen while gathering the ball Turner fell heavily.
After being assessed and down for several minutes, Turner was helped to his feet and helped off the pitch.
Hopefully his injury is not too serious and he will be back in action sooner rather than later.
Fawcett Work Rate
Ben Fawcett was a constant runner for his team. Always running at the Penybont defence and looking to create chances.
He was almost in a few times during the game but was denied by some good defending from Penybont.
On another day Fawcett would have got himself on the scoresheet and will be a threat as phase two begins.
How High could Penybont Finish
Penybont are in fifth place as phase two begins and a point behind Barry Town who are fourth. With the top two of Connah’s Quay Nomads and TNS some way ahead a good run of results means a possible third of fourth place.
As there will be no Welsh Cup this season the third placed team will qualify for the Europa Conference League. Bala Town who are currently in third place have a seven point lead.
With two more games against Bala it is possible Penybont can close that gap. With the quality of Kane Owen’s delivery and Sam Snaith in the box its more than possible.
