Penybont dealt a blow to Connah’s Quay’s title defence by securing a 2-0 victory at Deeside Stadium.

The defeat sees the Nomads taste a home league defeat for the first time since March 2019 with Rhys Griffiths’ side flawless in their performance.

Goals either side of the half from Kane Owen and Kostya Georgievsky gave the team a fantastic result in the race for a European spot.

The Nomads’ top-of-the-league status is now under threat, with a win for The New Saints later this afternoon putting them in second place.

Both teams started strongly, with the lack of clear-cut chances in the first quarter showcasing both sides’ defensive capabilities.

Nomads striker Michael Wilde’s tame header was saved by goalkeeper Ashley Morris.

Penybont were rewarded for their positive start as captain Owen calmly converted from the penalty spot following Daniel Holmes’ foul on Ben Ahmun.

Morris dealt with the Nomads’ aerial bombardment fantastically, demanding his box and claiming crosses frequently.

The Penybont goal continued to be challenged as Aeron Edwards fired wide with a volley from the edge of the box.

Moments later, Aron Williams found the target with a shot from outside the area, but Morris saved well in the last chance of the first-half.

Keen to preserve their unbeaten record at home, the Nomads came out of the changing rooms with a real incentive to claim the halves first goal.

Wilde’s goal-bound effort at the start of the second half was denied brilliantly by Morris.

Connah’s Quay continued to apply pressure with continuous balls being played into the box.

Jamie Insall nearly had an instant impact after coming on. He converted from close but it was disallowed as he was offside.

George Horan failed to convert a golden chance around the hour mark. His header from inside the six-yard-box flew over the crossbar.

Relentless attacking from the hosts saw them come close again. Wilde’s powerful header fired off the crossbar.
Owen came close to doubling his tally, with a sneakly-hit free-kick being denied by the woodwork.

Substitutes Danny Davies and Insall linked up to create a chance. The former found the latter free in the box, but Insall failed to connect smoothly with his header.

Neil Danns found space in the box for a shot, but his attempt was blocked by Matthew Harris.

Despite all the pressure from the hosts, the away side were the ones who claimed that all important second oal of the match.

The lead was doubled with ten minutes left to play, as Kostya Georgievsky converted at the near post after being played through by a long throw-in by Mael Davies.
