UEFA confirm Super League players will be banned from national team

UEFA who govern European football at both domestic and international level say they will stop players who feature for the Super League sides from representing their national teams.

President of UEFA Alexander Ceferin said: “The players that will play in the Super League will be banned from playing in the World Cup and Euros. They will not be allowed play for their national teams”.

FIFPro, which represents more than 60,000 professional footballers, however, condemns any move to block players from representing their national team.

The world player’s union for footballers says that players shouldn’t be banned should they represent teams in the European Super League.

In a response to Ceferin’s comments, FIFPro said: “We will vigorously oppose measures by either side that would impede the rights of players, such as exclusion from their national teams.

“In the best interests of players, and the whole industry, we are committed to working with all stakeholders towards decisions that support all levels of the game and repair its existing flaws.

From a Welsh perspective, a number of players could be exiled from the national team, should the idea come to effect.

Aaron Ramsey, Ben Davies, Dan James, Ethan Ampadu, Harry Wilson, captain Gareth Bale, Joe Rodon, and Neco Williams, all could be ineligible to play for Cymru.
