Sophie Ingle to play in Champions League final after Chelsea beat Bayern Munich

Wales captain Sophie Ingle is set to play in the Champions League final after Chelsea dramatically saw off Bayern Munich 5-3 on aggregate in their semi-final.

Late goals from Pernille Harder and Fran Kirby saw the Blues win 3-1 at Kingsmeadow to set up a final against Barcelona.

The Spanish side reached their second final in three years by beating PSG 3-2 on aggregate.

Should Chelsea win in Gothenburg on 16 May, Ingle will join Ian Rush, Joey Jones, Jayne Ludlow, Ryan Giggs, Jess Fishlock and Gareth Bale in becoming a European Champion.

She also joins the likes of Glan Letheren, Terry Yorath, Craig Bellamy, Ben Davies, and Ben Woodburn in being involved in a Champions League/European Cup final.

Ingle returned to the Chelsea midfield after covering for Magda Eriksson in defence during the first leg.

Ingle is hoping to be part of a Blues side which is competing for the the quadruple this season.

They already lifted the Conti Cup in March and currently sit top of the Women’s Super League with two games to go.

They are also still in the FA Cup, they were set to play Everton in the 5th round on 16 May but that now clashes with the CL final on the same day.

Any titles won this season will add to Ingle’s already impressive title credentials having won the WSL in 2019/20, League Cup in 2019/20 and 2020/21 and the 2020 Community Shield.

Ingle was a part of the Bristol Academy (now Bristol City) side that knocked out Barcelona from the Champions League in 2014/15.

They lost to Frankfurt in the next round who would go on to win the competition as Jess Fishlock picked up her first of two winners medals.

This is the first time Chelsea have reached the final, and the first time an English side have done so since Arsenal and Jayne Ludlow beat Umeå in 2007.
