Flint Town United 0-0 Aberystwyth Town: Stalemate as Amis is dismissed for Silkmen

Ten-man Flint Town United held Aberystwyth Town to a goalless draw at the Essity Stadium. 

In a largely uneventful match in front of goal, the talking point was certainly Josh Amis’ first-half dismissal. Amis was shown his marching orders on the stroke of halftime, in the 45th minute, for a late challenge on Jamie Veale.

Just before Amis was sent off, Harry Franklin made a similar challenge on Callum Bratley, but only received a yellow card.

A fairly even match all-in-all as both sides created some chances, but both were unable to capitalise. The match was mostly battled in the midfield, and following the red card, the match continued to stay quite even.

Following this result, neither side make any movement in the table. Flint remain in fourth place in the Play Off Conference, with Aberystwyth two points behind in fifth.

The final matchday next Saturday will decide who finishes in the last spot in the relegation zone, Flint or Aberystwyth. Obviously neither side will be relegated, as relegation has been voided this season.

Some early pressure from Franklin caused problems for the hosts. The Aberystwyth forward continued to break down the left-hand side and cut into the box on his right foot. This earned the visitors two corners in the first 10 minutes, but they were unable to create anything from these chances.

Ed Clarke tried his luck from a distance as he picked up the ball in midfield and struck towards Connor Roberts’ goal. His effort was struck well, but without the direction, as the ball went flying past the post.

The first big chance came as Josh Amis had the opportunity to give his side the lead. Clarke fizzed a cross in from the left hand side and found Amis at the back post. The Silkmen’s forward couldn’t get a clean connection on the ball, and Aberystwyth managed to clear the danger.

Ross Weaver was the next Flint player to have an effort on goal. Similarly to Clarke’s earlier chance, Weaver struck the ball well, but Ian Kearney managed to intercept his effort and block the ball from reaching Roberts in goal.

Conor Harwood was forced off through injury in the 29th minute after a collision with Aberystwyth’s Roberts. Mark Cadwallader came on in his place.

The best chance of the half came to Franklin. Aberystwyth’s number six got the ball in the Flint box but blasted his effort well over the bar. A fantastic opportunity for the visitors to take the lead.

Franklin had the ball in the back of the net in the 44th minute, but the forward was ruled out for offside.

Amis was shown his marching orders in the 45th minute for a late challenge on Jamie Veale. This almost started a brawl, as Aberyswyth players were enraged by the tackle. Two Flint players were shown a yellow card as well as their manager, and one for Aberystwyth’s Mathew Jones.

Jones had a chance to give the Seasiders the lead early in the second half. His strike from distance went well over the bar, as Aberystwyth continued to struggle with their finishing.

In what was a very uneventful second half, Flint continued to create chances, even though they were down to 10 men. The Silkmen sent the ball into the Aberystwyth box on numerous occasions, but couldn’t finish any of the chances.
