Nomads clinch second consecutive Cymru Premier title with final day victory at Pen-y-Bont

Connah’s Quay Nomads won the JD Cymru Premier title for the second consecutive season with a 2-0 victory at Pen-y-Bont on the final day of the season.

The Deeside club held a two-point advantage over rivals The New Saints before kick-off, knowing if Anthony Limbrick’s side could secure a win in their game against Bala Town, they would also have to win at the SDM Glass Stadium.

Indeed, the Saints, who played much of the game with 10 men after Ryan Harrington’s first-half dismissal, came out on top 2-0 at Park Hall.

But the result in Oswestry was academic after Andy Morrison’s side ran out 2-0 winners in south Wales.

The Nomads got off to a dream start when captain George Horan headed home at the back post from an Aeron Edwards cross after just five minutes.

Former New Saints midfielder Edwards turned scorer as he put the nail in the coffin with a second-half header from inside the area.

One of the decisive games of the season came two weeks ago when the Nomads overturned a 1-0 deficit late on to win at Barry Town United.

Another pivotal victory was their 4-1 thrashing of title competitors The New Saints in April, with Michael Wilde netting a hat-trick against his former club.

Wilde missed the final game through suspension, but his 18 goals in 27 league appearances this season played a huge role in the Nomads’ success. He made history by becoming only the fourth player in history to score 200 top-flight goals in Wales.

Centre-half Horan scored seven goals throughout the season, often popping up when it mattered most.

Ex-Chester midfielder Declan Poole also played his part in the title victory, with his delivery helping the Nomads throughout.
