Connah’s Quay Nomads lifted the Cymru Premier title for the second season on the trot following a 2-0 victory away to Penybont on Saturday afternoon.

Andy Morrison’s Nomads left it to the final day to secure the trophy, with The New Saints hot on their heels.

TNS’s eight-season streak of winning the competition was brought to an end last season.

Here are the key talking points from Saturday’s game:

Heroic performance from Horan

Connah’s Quay captain George Horan opened the scoring for his side in the fifth minute when he headed home from an Aeron Edwards cross.

It was the central-defender’s seventh goal of the season.

His leadership, consistency and assuredness massively benefitted the side.

Perfect afternoon for Edwards

Aeron Edwards signed for Connah’s Quay Nomads after a lengthy 11-year spell at The New Saints.

He became the league’s most frequent title winner as he collected his 10th winners medal, beating his previous employers to the league.

Edwards set up Horan for the first and relieved Connah’s Quay of pressure by securing the victory with an astute header in the final quarter of the game.

An all-round fantastic afternoon which will be remembered forever.

One eye on the play-off

Despite losing 1-0 to Bala Town, Penybont secured fourth spot in the league last weekend.

Penybont made five changes in personnel from last weekend, with a European play-off semi-final against Newtown to be played next weekend.

A victory for Rhys Griffiths’ side against Newtown will mean they will host the winner of Barry Town United v Caernarfon Town in a play-off showdown for a place in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
