Swansea City crowned Welsh Premier Women’s League champions

Swansea City have been crowned champions of the Welsh Premier Women’s League champions after drawing 0-0 with Abergavenny Women.

The Swans win Welsh Women’s football top prize after winning pipping their fiercest Cardiff Met to the title by a point.

Colin Staples side won 13 games out of a possible 16, drawing their other league fixtures as they complete an unbeaten league season.

Impressively, they conceded just one league goal all season and scored 53 times. Stalwart forward Stacey John-Davis scored 14 of them, finishing third in the race for the Golden Boot.

It tops off a fine week for the Neath-based side after they won the Welsh Premier Women’s League Cup in midweek, defeating Cardiff City 4-1 at Dragon Park.

They claim their fifth league win and are now just one behind Cardiff Met, who have won six since it begun in 2009.

As a result of their success, they will compete in the 2021/22 UEFA Women’s Champions League. They will join at the Round One stage which will take place in mid August.

In response to their title success, Pontypridd Town Women’s Director of Football, Fern Burrage-Male said: “Congratulations all. Top class this season! Enjoy the celebrations.”

It is the first time that the Swans have retained the title since the league moved from a play-off final to a league format.

Swansea’s title triumph is the last of its kind in this format. The FAW tomorrow will announce the new pyramid structure of Women’s football which will see the league reduced to eight teams, don a new name and showcase a new trophy.
