Dolgellau AAFC earn promotion to Ardal Leagues after filling vacancy

Dolgellau AAFC have achieved an upward movement to the Ardal Leagues North East division following a successful application.

A vacancy was opened up in Welsh football’s newest men’s leagues after Montgomery Town withdrew due to a player shortage. They have since been accepted into the Mid Wales League East by the Central Wales FA.

In their last season, Dolgellau finished 12th in the Mid Wales League, which at the time was the third tier before the formation of the Ardal Leagues.

A total of 12 clubs from the fourth tier had successfully earned the Tier Three Licence, the requirement to play in the Ardal Leagues, but it was decided that Owain Williams’ side would be the team to compete with local rivals Bow Street, Penparcau and Machynlleth.

Commenting on their promotion, the club said in a tweet: “Wow. Fantastic News!! What a great opportunity now for our town to be competing and hosting at this level again. Thank you to all of our sponsors, volunteers, and supporters. May the hard work continue on and off the field. Well done everyone.”

Explaining their season to promote Dolgellau, the FAW referred to the FAW Pyramid Regulations and said: “Regulation 1a states: ‘The Pyramid League System provides football clubs throughout Wales with a framework of competitive men’s football appropriate to their playing standards, ground facilities, geographical location and economic means and permits the seasonal promotion, relegation or lateral movement of clubs between the Tiers and the divisions of the Tiers in an orderly manner.’

Last month, the club announced the signing of Rob Evans, who joined his hometown club after a year of interest. Evans played for the likes of Aberystwyth, Bala Town, and Porthmadog before joining the Gwynedd based outfit.
