Dundalk, who will face Newtown in the UEFA Europa Conference League tomorrow, have been rocked by a ‘minor’ Covid outbreak.

Reports emerged in Ireland earlier today that The Lilywhites have seen a number of players return positive tests in UEFA’s rigorous testing protocols.

They will now wait on the advice of their club doctor on who will be available for their first competitive meeting with a Welsh side as they liase with the relevant bodies.

It was then confirmed by manager Vinny Perth to RTÉ Sport that Dundalk were dealing with the issues: “There’s a lot going on. We have some issues in our camp in relation to Covid, which has broken in the last couple of hours.

“We had a Covid test yesterday within the club as part of UEFA protocols. Over the last number of hours, we have started to receive those.

“There are some Covid issues within our squad. It’s very early to give definite numbers on it but we do have some issues.

“Our doctors are in contact with the players. They haven’t attended training today. They’ve been told to stay at home until we clear it up.

“Over the next number of hours, I’ll get clarity on that. But there’s no doubt we have some players missing the game tomorrow due to Covid.”

The Robins themselves have had to deal with Covid issues of their own with up to four players missing out.

It was revealed by The Sport Report on Sunday that the Mid Wales side would be without some players after testing positive in the second round of testing. It prompted them to postpone their last warm-up match with Bala Town, who are also representing Wales in Europe.

Newtown have travelled to Dublin and will now train at Oriel Park ahead of Thursday’s match.

They have been boosted by the addition of James Rowland, who signed following his release from Shrewsbury Town.
