Sean Wharton has been appointed as the new manager of Abergavenny Town.

The 52-year-old succeeds Ben Murphy, who left his role in early July. Murphy has since taken up a post on the Abertillery Bluebirds coaching staff.

Jack Nield had been acting as interim manager and was in the dugout for the 2-0 win over Nantyglo in the FAW Amateur Trophy.

Wharton, who is the father of Barry Town United and Saint Kitts and Nevis midfielder Theo Wharton, has a long involvement in the Welsh domestic game.

During his playing career, he featured in the late 1980s for Sunderland before moving to Cwmbrân Town, where he won the inaugural Cymru Premier with the Crows.

He later moved on to Inter Cardiff, playing there for four years.

Wharton later featured for Weston-super-Mare before taking coaching roles up at Welsh clubs.

They include being the first-team manager at Goytre, as well as an assistant to Nathan Cadette at Bridgend Street.
