Brecon Corries 3, Llandrindod Wells 0: Corries conquer in JD Welsh Cup

Rich Field witnessed Mid Wales League East outfit Brecon Corries progress into the first round of the JD Welsh Cup after a comprehensive 3-0 win against Ardal South East side Llandrindod Wells.

The home side began confidently as they tested Andrew Leonard in the Wells goal on a couple of occasions in the opening minutes but it was the visitors who had the first clear cut effort of the match after eight minutes of play. Paul McCambridge’s delivery into the the box arrived at Robert Nicholls’ feet but he was his effort palmed away by Declan Gaydon.

Llandrindod started to take the grasp of the match after some early nerves with Stuart Williams causing problems down the wing as he linked up with Nicholls seeing the chance saved prior to another driving run by Williams allowing Thomas Evans to break into the area but blaze over the crossbar.

Down the other end Brecon also came close to breaking the deadlock. A header by Joel Evans on the penalty spot was denied following a freekick aswell as Gareth Aplin seeing his freekick cleared with ease.

Midway through the half, Aplin’s ball into the box was headed back across the face of goal which Leonard misjudged but luckily Zak Baker on the backpost managed to hack the ball off the line in a let off for the visitors.

The game was opening up with Wells’ Evans’ effort from 25 yards fumbled and re-collected by Gaydon and then Evans and McCambridge combining in the box but the strike was palmed away.

Craig Evans tested Leonard following a dribble into the 18 yard box but the shotstopper managed to block the shot with his outstretched leg.

The deadlock was broken in the 41st minute. A corner was whipped into the box and headed back in arriving at the feet of Aplin on the edge of the area to set up captain Dale Evans who brilliantly half volleyed the ball into the far corner from around 15 yards out to make it 1-0.

Two minutes later, Corries doubled their advantage as a goalmouth scramble wasn’t dealt with by Llandrindod which allowed James Jeffreys to power the ball home to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at the interval.

Trailing 2-0, a reaction was needed by Llandrindod and they tried to hit back only a minute into the second half as they were awarded a freekick on the edge of the area but Evans struck the ball straight over the far post.

Brecon almost added to their tally as Corey Evans’ teasing delivery arrived to Dale Evans who was unmarked but his header went inches wide of the upright in an opportunity that should’ve seen them go 3-0 ahead.

The hosts were playing well on the flawless surface and were looking comfortable on the ball. 12 minutes into the half, Gavin Perry spotted Leonard off his line and almost deceived him with a spectacular 40 yard lob which had to be tipped over at the last second by the goalkeeper.

Llandrindod’s game was summed up on the hour mark as an excellent throughball from Shaun Nicholls carved open Brecon’s backline but when one-on-one with Gaydon, Wells’ Thomas Evans soared his strike over the woodwork.

Minutes later, Nicholls lacked composure and placed his effort over the bar from 20 yards from Evans’ pass.

A quick break from Brecon down the wing, saw the ball arrive to Evans but put wide from four yards out with the hosts edging closer and closer to booking their spot in the 1st Round.

It was confirmed on the 70th minute with an incredible individual mazy run from the halfway line by Evans’ who managed to shake off his three markers and then smash the ball into the net and giving the home side a deserved victory as they then saw the rest of the match out with ease.
