Former Swansea City U23 goalkeeper Gregor Zabret has become Aberystwyth Town’s fourth signing of the transfer window.

Zabret is a former Slovenia U21 international, making five appearances in 2015 and 2016, and captaining the side on three occasions.

Zabret made his senior debut at just 16 years old, playing for NK Domzale against NK Celje in Slovenia’s top tier in November 2011.

The goalkeeper became one of the youngest players in Domzale’s history, second only to former Newcastle striker Haris Vuckic.

After a season and a half in Domzale’s senior squad, in July 2013 Zabret joined Swansea’s under-21 side. Zabret spent seven years with the Swans, whilst he also had a short loan spell at Oldham in 2019.

Whilst at the Swans, Zabret played alongside future Wales internationals such as Daniel James, Joe Rodon, and Connor Roberts.

The goalkeeper was part of the under-23 side that won the Premier League 2 Division Two and the Premier League Cup in 2016/17.

Although he was named on Swansea’s bench for a number of Premier League games, Zabret never made a senior appearance for the Swans, and he left the Swans in February 2020.

Zabret originally joined Northern Premier League side Ashton United in July but has now made the move to Park Avenue, where he will fill the gap left by Connor Roberts’ return to The New Saints.

The 25-year-old told Aber’s website; “My first impressions of the club are very positive. I spoke with a few people from the club and everyone was very welcoming, so I’m looking forward to getting started.

“I’m familiar with the league and I think clubs are getting stronger every year, so it will be a good challenge for me.

“I spoke with plenty of people to get information about the club and all I heard were good things. The gaffer and a couple of players seemed excited to work with me, so it just felt right to make this move.”

Zabret’s arrival follows the signings of Alex Darlington, Sam Phillips, and Owen Orford.
