Penlan Club 1-1 p Baglan Dragons: Baglan move through after penalties victory

Baglan Dragons came from behind to defeat ten men Penlan 4-1 on penalties at Mynydd Newydd and advance to the FAW Trophy Fourth Round.

The away side bounced back after falling behind from a goal by Rhys Coffey early on. They equalised through a goal from Dylan Thomas which took the tie to penalties where they scored all four penalties to move through to the fourth round.


Baglan had the first chance of the game, just after three minutes, a ball fell to McCalmon in the box, but he couldn’t put it away and the ball went wide of the post.

Penlan then played themselves back into this tie. They won a free kick in their own half which was taken by Rhys Otten.

He put a good ball into the box, and it only needed a touch and that came from Rhys Coffey, and it passed Stanton and into the net which gave the home side an early lead just after ten minutes.

Just after the goal, Baglan started to build themselves back into the match and they put a good move together which ended with a goalmouth scramble. The ball was cleared off the line by the linesman seen as an offside, but the away side was getting back into the game.

The home side then started to get the control back in their favor, a cross-field ball found Dale Otten on the right-hand side found Dale Otten, and he got a shot away,  but it was easily dealt by Stanton in the net.

Baglan started the second half as the much better side. McCalmon found some space in the area, but it was saved by Marcus Collins.

Just after, Penlan earned themselves a corner, but it was a poor delivery, the ball was headed by the away side, but it fell to Corey Charles at the edge of the area, but his shot went over the bar.

After a quiet period in the game, Penlan took control of the game, the ball came out to Nathan Lewis on the right. He had a shot, but it went past the goalkeeper’s left-hand side and out of play.

The game then changed for the home side when Paul Lewis dived in to try and win the ball but unfortunately, he caught the Baglan player, and it was his second yellow card, and he gave Craig Templeton no choice but to issue a second yellow card and a red for the experienced Penlan midfielder.

Just after that incident, Penlan had a very good chance, Chris Fisher picked up the ball and drove forward, but his shot was easily saved by the Baglan keeper.

For Baglan, Dylan Thomas struck a well just outside the box and it past Luke Edwards the makeshift goalkeeper who earlier on in the game had to replace Marcus Collins who went off injured. With eight minutes to go, Baglan looked the stronger side who were now level and dominating.

Baglan in the late stage of the game turned to a 3-5-2 to try and dominate the midfield with the man advantage, and just before full time they won the ball back in midfield and it fell to Luke Evans, but his shot was miss-hit and went wide.

They were no late chances for either side and the game was to be decided on penalties.

Tom Randall, Matthew Herman, Dylan Thomas, and Luke Evans slotted home all Baglan penalties, and the away side progressed through to the next round.
