Ynysygerwn 2-0 Pontyclun: Humphries nets brace in home success over The Clun

Ynysygerwn picked up their second win of the season as they defeated Pontyclun 2-0 at Llandarcy Academy of Sport in the Ardal South West.

The home captain Lloyd Humphries netted from the penalty spot 10 minutes before half-time after Chris Coles took out David Lewis inside the area.

Humphries then had a second opportunity to score from a spot-kick after Coles brought Bradley Crooks down. The goalkeeper was equal to his effort this time, however, he could only parry the ball back into Humphries’ path and he duly fired home to double his side’s lead.

The result sees Ynysygerwn move up three places to ninth in the Ardal League South West standings, leapfrogging Pontyclun in the process, who drop down three places to 11th

The first half took a while to get going, with both teams failing to create any clear-cut chances as they tried their luck from distance.

Ynysygerwn nearly took the lead when Coles came to clear his lines from a corner, only to see the ball deflect onto the cross bar and away to safety.

From the clearance, Pontyclun went down the other end of the field and had a two-on-one opportunity, but impressive solo defensive work from Jonathan Davies denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity. 

Pontyclun, who began the second-half 1-0 down after Humphries’ penalty, started on top and forced a save from Luke Jones after Joel Woodington fired his half-volley straight at the goalkeeper.

Nicholas Maggs’ side’s second goal – and particularly the nature of it – took some of the sting out of a Pontyclun side who had fought hard to try and find an equalising goal.

They did continue to push forward, however, and Woodington will be wondering how he didn’t get on the scoresheet.
