Cardiff Met 3-2 Penybont: Archers up and running after putting out Bont flames

Cardiff Met picked up their first league victory of the season, with a win over previously unbeaten Penybont

Nathan Wood opened the scoring for Penybont, before goals by Adam Roscrow, Eliot Evans and Harry Owen put Met in control. A late goal by Lewis Clutton was nothing more than a consolation goal for Penybont.

Despite opening the scoring in all of their games so far this season, Bont have failed to hang on to the lead on all occasions.

Penybont seemed to dominate the first half, with the attacking trio of Wood, Waite, and Watts causing plenty of problems for the Met defence. However, Met seemed to dominate the second half more, and they reduced the influence of Penybont’s attackers.

The opening goal by Wood came after a cross by Mael Davies was headed towards the goal by Keane Watts. Goalkeeper Alex Lang did well to parry it away, but it was straight to the feet of Nathan Wood for a simple finish.

Met had an opportunity to equalise from a free kick ten minutes later. The ball into the box reached Evans at the back post, but the shot was straight at Ashley Morris.

James Waite showed his pace to start a counter-attack for Penybont, before Kane Owen was brought down outside the box. The left-back played the ball into Harling, but his shot was well over the bar.

It was Nathan Wood’s turn next to show his pace. Tom Price missed a header in midfield, and Wood pounced on the loose ball before playing a superb pass to Watts on the other side of the field. Unfortunately for Bont, the resulting shot missed the target.

In the final ten minutes of the first half, Christian Edwards’ side equalised, arguably against the run of play. Kane Owen failed to clear a long ball into the box, and Matt Chubb pounced with a shot from a tight angle. Morris parried Chubb’s strike, but Adam Roscrow got to the ball first to level the scores.

Early in the second half Met were awarded a penalty. Former Met player Mael Davies brought Adam Roscrow down in the penalty area, and referee Ryan Kenny pointed straight to the spot. Eliot Evans made no mistake with the penalty, and the home were in the lead.

10 minutes later, Harry Owen extended for his side. The forward picked up the ball after a header by Eliot Evans and kept his composure to beat Morris.

After Owen’s goal, Penybont were pushing for a goal of their own, but they didn’t have the killer instinct to make the most of their possession. They had to wait until stoppage time to pull a goal back, after Kane Owen’s cross was spilled by Lang, and substitute Lewis Clutton was on hand to get Penybont back in the game.

After this result, Met have climbed up to seventh whilst Penybont have dropped down to ninth in the table. Both look ahead to the weekend with matches against lower league opposition in the Welsh Cup.
