Barry Town United 3-2 Haverfordwest County: Late Green penalty deals Bluebirds a blow

Clayton Green inspired Barry Town United to a late victory over ten-man Haverfordwest County at Jenner Park.

The box-to-box midfielder scored a brace – one from open play and the other an 89th-minute penalty – for the second game in a row, already matching his best goals return for a Cymru Premier season.

Green put the Linnets in front in the 30th minute before Ben Fawcett netted two goals inside the last 12 minutes of the half but Chris Hugh responded after the hour mark and then Green scored from the spot with former Wales international Jazz Richards red-carded.

Gavin Chesterfield’s men pick up their seventh point out of a possible 12 meanwhile the Bluebirds remain without a league victory, picking up just one point from their opening four matches.

Haverfordwest started well and Corey Shephard had the games first chance as he shot wide. Soon after a ball over the Barry defence found Ben Fawcett who shot straight at Mike Lewis.

Marcus Day played a nice one-two with Clayton Green and made a run down the left. Day put a good cross into the box looking for Nat Jarvis, but the Barry forward couldn’t get to the ball.

Kurtis Rees stole the ball from Luke Cummings and was able to play in Fawcett in the box. Fawcett didn’t get a good connection on the ball and his effort went wide.

County won a free kick as Jordan Cotterill was penalised for a high foot. Henry Jones took the free-kick but only found the Barry wall.

At the half-hour mark, it was Barry who struck first. Cotterill finding Clayton Green in space in the box and the Barry captain fired a shot into the top corner.

Just three minutes later and the game was level. Haverfordwest worked the ball out wide and sent the ball across the box where Fawcett was hand to tap in.

County had the ball in the net just a minute later as Sisay headed in from Henry Jones’ cross but the forward was offside.

The Bluebirds did however lead at the break as Fawcett got his second of the game. Fawcett striking into the top corner from outside the box.

Gavin Chesterfield made a change at the break bringing Aaron Davies on for Marcus Day as Barry looked to get back into the game.

Henry Jones was pulling the strings for the visitors and had the first real chance of the half. Finding a pocket of space he shot low towards the corner of the goal but Mike Lewis was down well with a strong had to turn the ball away.

Chris Hugh pushed further forward in the second half and his blocked cross earned Barry a corner. The corner was whipped into the box and headed just over by Rhys Kavanagh.

Henry Jones had a shot blocked and Fawcett shot over after a quick turn away from defender.

Luke Cummings played a good ball down the right for Nat Jarvis. Jarvis with some good play but the ball across goal from the by line. As the ball went towards the far post Chris Hugh came sliding in to score.

Haverfordwest had to clear the ball off the line from a header after a good ball across the goal from Cummings.

Mike Lewis was forced into a good close-range save after Jones chipped the ball into the box.

Barry were working down the flanks and Cooper put a good ball across the box to Kavanagh who was twice stopped by Lee Idzi.

As the game went into the last two minutes a though ball found Cotterill with just the keeper to beat. Cotterill ran into the box and was brought down by Lee Idzi for a penalty.

Referee Bryn Markham-Jones gave a straight red card to Richards for something he said after the penalty was awarded. Clayton Green stepped up and sent Idzi the wrong way from the spot.
