Barry Town United 2-0 Goytre: Day and Press on target as Linnets avoid upset

Barry Town United moved to the next round of the JD Welsh Cup by defeating Goytre 2-0 at Jenner Park Stadium.

Marcus Day gave Barry the lead before the break, before they had to contend with going a man light after Rhys Abbruzzese’s dismissal, they reacted positively however with the returning Evan Press scoring on his first appearance back.


A quick start from Barry saw Luke Cummings make his way into the box forcing Susso out to clear for Goytre.

A Barry corner from the left to the near post saw Susso on action again as he punched away.

Barry had a free-kick after Nat Jarvis was fouled just past halfway, it was hit long into the Goytre box and met by Clayton Green who headed wide.

The game was scrappy and the teams were involved in a bit of head tennis. The ball fell to Lamin Conteh who tried from distance but it was wide.

Another Barry corner saw Susso out to catch the ball. The keeper lost the ball but did well to get down and recover it in a crowd of players.

Luke Cummings found Theo Wharton in space with his cross. Wharton rushed his shot and it strayed away from goal when he did have time to bring the ball down.

Conteh went after a ball over the top and shot, Kelland Absalom saved the effort and then bravely dived on the ball as Conteh went for the loose ball.

Chris Ham had a header at goal but Absalom saved and Conteh saw his shot blocked as Goytre looked to grow in confidence.

Marcus Day got the goal to break the deadlock after 38 minutes. Driving at the Goytre defenders Day made his way into the box and fired a low shot into the corner.

Barry had the ball in the net again moments later as Theo Wharton’s shot went in. The assistant referee flagged for offside.

Goytre dropped deeper in the second half allowing Barry the ball. Barry struggled again to final quality passes.

Barry had a good chance to make it two when Luke Cummings found Theo Wharton in the box, hitting it first time Wharton forced a good stop from Susso, who used his legs to block.

Wharton tried to play in Marcus Day on goal but Susso was out quick to collect the ball.

Rhys Abbruzzese was shown a yellow card for simulation. but The Barry players and supporters believed it was a penalty.

Brandon Griffiths came on and almost made an instant impact by setting up Jarvis. With the goal open Jarvis saw his poke go wide.

Goytre went on a counter-attack and Jayden Ali sent a curling effort towards goal. Absalom with a fine save to turn it away.

Rhys Abbruzzese was then sent off after 80 minutes as he picked up his second yellow, it looked a harsh second yellow for a soft foul.

Barry were able to cope with the loss of a player and even created chances with ten men.

With two minutes to play two of Barry subs linked up to seal the win. Brandon Griffiths, who had been causing problems for Goytre found Evan Press in on goal. Press on his return to Barry coolly put the ball in the corner to make it 2-0.
