Trefelin BGC 3-4 Cwmbran Celtic: Stoppage-time equaliser from Meaney secures fight back

Cwmbran Celtic battled from 3-1 down to claim a stoppage-time winner over Trefelin BGC at Ynys Park in the JD Cymru South.

Lewis Iles opening the scoring after 15 minutes before Sean Hanbury levelled the game. Two rapid-fire goals for Trefelin just after the break gave them a 3-1 lead with McCauley Power and Chris Jones both adding. Cwmbran kept going and Thomas Meechan pulled one back after 61 minutes. Substitute Jack Martin levelled the game after 77 minutes setting up a grandstand finish. Jordan Meaney got the vital goal in the last minute for Cwmbran.


Trefelin drops to ninth place in the JD Cymru South after their third defeat in a row meanwhile Cwmbran Celtic stay in 11th but only two points off Trefelin.


Trefelin started the game passing the ball around looking to utilise their wide players and get the ball into the box. Cwmbran were looking to contain Trefelin and were looking to hit them with fast counter-attacks.

It was Cwmbran who took the lead after 15 minutes as Lewis Iles downward header from a long free-kick into the box. The Cwmbran forward met the ball and headed in off the post.

Trefelin put the Cwmbran team under pressure, with Ryan Griffiths shooting wide before Sean Hanbury saw his shot blocked. McCauley Power had effort blocked and Jordan Davies’ lob found the roof of the goal.

The pressure told as just after the half-hour mark Trefelin levelled the match. The ball was crossed into the far post from a wide position and Sean Hanbury was there to head in.

Trefelin came out flying in the second half and were in front almost from the kickoff. Chris Jones playing a superb cross for Power to head home.

It was soon 3-1 after another good ball into the Celtic box fell to Chris Jones who fired into the goal.

Trefelin went looking for a fourth but as the half wore on Cwmbran came into the game and importantly did not let Trefelin run away with it.

Cwmbran were back in it after 61 minutes as Thomas Meechan got on to the end of a good ball into the box and scored with a low shot.

Just over fifteen minutes from time, Cwmbran equalised thanks to sub Jack Martin. Another though ball found Martin who coolly put the ball home.

The game was there for the taking for both sides. Sean Hanbury’s free-kick heading to the top corner was saved brilliantly by Andrew Larcombe meanwhile up the other end Alex McDowell saw his effort at the other end go over the bar.

Cwmbran began to apply pressure to Trefelin as Meechan saw one shot go over before another effort was blocked and his follow up shot came back off the post.

Into the final minutes of the game and Cwmbran’s late pressure finally told. A perfectly weighted cross to the far post was met by Jordan Meaney who put the ball into the top corner to seal the points.
