Port Talbot Town 0-1 Pontypridd Town: Buxton nets late winner for Dragons

Pontypridd Town secured their second win of the Adran Premier as they defeated Port Talbot Town 1-0 at Victoria Road.

Carys Bufton scored with nine minutes to play resigning Port Talbot Town to their third defeat of the season.

Bufton grabbed the games only goal in the closing stages as both teams struggled to create in the final third.

Pontypridd move to fourth place in the Adran Premier table level on six points with Cardiff Met. Port Talbot sit bottom on goal difference from TNS with both sides awaiting their first points this season.



Pontypridd had the games first chance with Alison Witts trying her luck from the edge of the area. The shot went straight at Port Talbot keeper Emily Roberts who made an easy save.

Soon after Bufton tried a lob from distance which went over the bar.

The Dragon’s cranked up the pressure and used their wide players to put crosses into the box. The Port Talbot defence stood strong with Terri Beddows and Chelsey Harris heading them away.

Port Talbot’s Kirsty O’Donnell was played into space in the area but she could only hit a tame shot which was easy for Maisie Jones to save.

Soon after O’Donnell play a defence splitting pass but none of her teammates were able to get onto the ball.

The half continued with both teams creating half chances and neither side testing the others keeper. Witts shot over for Pontypridd while Coryn Sexton also shot over for Port Talbot.

Millie Jones went the closest before the break with her shot from an acute angle going just over the bar.

Port Talbot had an early chance as O’Donnell won the ball from Witts in the middle of the park. She passed the ball to Courtney Thomas who sent her effort wide.

Bufton was showing signs of creating the opening as she latched on to a ball behind the defence but Terri Beddows made an important tackle.

Thomas won the ball for Port Talbot and played it to Jessie Taylor. Taylor played in O’Donnell who shot wide.

Witts had another go from the edge of the area but the shot was an easy save for Emily Roberts.

As the half wore on Ponty put the pressure on their host. Bufton forcing a decent save from Roberts with her close-range effort.

Soon after Bufton was clean though and went round Roberts, Roberts recovered and was able to do enough to put of Bufton whose shot hit the post.

Bufton was not to be denied however as she got the games only goal after 81 minutes. From a cross out on the right, Witts took a shot that was blocked. Beddows blocked the follow-up shot but Bufton was able to poke the ball home.

Port Talbot tried to get back into the game as Thomas set up Lauren Amore, who shot wide.

Pontypridd were able to keep the ball in the Port Talbot half in the final minutes and hold out for the win.
