Dinas Powys 2-4 Guilsfield: Guils fend off Dinas fight-back to book

Guilsfield claimed victory in a thrilling JD Welsh Cup tie at Murchfield 4-2 over Dinas Powys.

In an end-to-end game, the Cymru North side came out on top over the Ardal South East outfit.

Adam Jenkins gave the visitors the lead after 16 minutes before Robert James made it two after 22 minutes. Gareth Emmanuel pulled a goal back for the hosts on 32 minutes and Luke Birnage levelled the game after 33 minutes. Robert James restored Guilsfield lead on 41 minutes and George Clifton added a fourth in added time.

Guilsfield can now look forward to the next round were they could face TNS, Cardiff Met of Connah’s Quay.


Dinas show their intent early on as Guilsfield keeper Michael Jones was forced to concede a corner. The corner came out to the edge of the box and a long range effort was defected wide.

Guilsfield played a long ball over the top looking to find Jamie Hyne in the box. The pass had a little too much on it and went to Dinas Keeper Elliot Matthews.

The visitors made use of long throws into the box and an early one saw Robert James head wide.

On 16 minutes Guilsfield had the lead, Adam Jenkins quickest to the ball after Matthews made a good save from a long-range effort.

Soon after and it was 2-0 with Jenkins playing a role again. Making a good run into the area passing two Dinas players, Jenkins lifted the ball across the box and found Robert James who headed in.

Dinas kept to their game plan and continued to press and pressure and in a frantic two-minute period they were back level. Sam Roberts put a ball across the box and Guilsfield were only able to half clear. Dinas kept the ball and forced a corner. Gareth Emmanuel took the corner and sent an in swinger towards the back post which went straight in.

With their visitors rocked Dinas went straight on the attack and won another corner. Another in swinger to the back post but this time headed in by Luke Birnage to make it 2-2.

Guilsfield came back on the attack with Sam Litchfield heading over and Andrew Ford seeing his downward header saved by Matthews.

Soon after Ford saw his shot blocked and go out for a corner. The corner went over the box and Guilsfield worked it back into the six-yard box allowing James to poke in from close range.

Dinas came out for the second half fired up and looked to level the score. Michael Davies saw his effort saved by Michael Jones.

Dinas were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box as Callum Smith was fouled. Gareth Emmanuel went close to finding the top corner with his effort going just over.

The home side were really pushing with Emmanuel sending several crosses towards the far post.

Jamie Hyne went close putting his effort just wide of the post. Soon after James headed down to the corner forcing a full-stretch save from Matthews.

Chris Cathrall sent a long throw into the box and James met it seeing his header blocked, then a shot from the follow-up was also blocked.

On 79 minutes Guilsfield were down to ten as Sam Litchfield was given a second yellow for a late tackle on Abdelrahman Boulaiche.

With their opponents down to ten Dinas throw everything at them. Callum Smith forcing a fine save from Jones, as Dinas reworked the ball Jones head to punch away.

As the game entered added time Dinas had a free-kick just past the halfway line. Keeper Matthews went up for the attack but Guilsfield were able to clear and found George Clifton. Clifton broke away and with an empty goal made it 4-2 to seal the game.
