Colwyn Bay 1-0 Cardiff Met: Seagulls secure first quarter-final spot in 29 years
Colwyn Bay progress into the last eight of the JD Welsh Cup for the first time in 29 years after causing an upset against Cardiff Met.
The Seagulls battled until the end with Jack Higgins’ strike the difference between the two sides.
Met started the game on the front foot and had a great chance to go ahead through Roscrow after five minutes when he was found by Evans at the back post.
Met continued with the early pressure and it payed off when they won a penalty after Sirrell’s challenge. Evans stepped up and saw his penalty saved by Andy Coughlin.
After nine minutes the Bay found themselves ahead. Captain Tom McCready whipped a great ball into a dangerous area, running onto the cross was Jack Higgins who was not followed by the Met defenders. Higgins calmly turned the ball home to a roar from the home crowd.
A few minutes later the action-packed start took another turn when Roscrow headed in after a few deflected efforts. However, the Met celebrations were cut short by the referee’s whistle as the linesman flagged for offside.
Met didn’t let that phase them however and went close again on the 15-minute mark when Lewis Rees fired wide from McCarthy’s clever pull back.
The rest of the first half failed to match the intensity and action of the first 15 minutes with very little clear-cut chances for either side.
The second half started with Met on top but despite their dominance of possession in the second half as they pushed forward it was the home side that had the best chance when McCready provided a brilliant cross from the right-hand side to find Kirby in space. Kirby guided the ball towards goal, but the goalkeeper saved well.
As Met pushed forward, Colwyn Bay dropped deep to defend their 1-0 lead. Their fight and desire was evident throughout the second half especially with Williams sticking with Owen to deny a dangerous chance for the Met attacker.
Met thought they were level in the last minute when it looked like Roscrow was set to head home, but again the Bay defenders put their bodies on the line as Sam Downey got back and proded the ball away and out of danger.
Colwyn Bay held on in the last few seconds to cause a big upset against Welsh Premier opposition.
