Jess Fishlock nominated for the NWSL’s MVP award

Wales all time record appearance maker Jess Fishlock has been nominated for the National Women’s Soccer Leagues‘ 2021 Most Valuable Player award.

Since returning to the United States, the OL Reign midfielder has been on fire in the league, scoring five goals and assisting four during the regular season.

The 34-year-old also recorded 21 interceptions, had a 66% tackle success rate, and she also ranks in the top five in a number of passing metrics like through balls and smart passes.

Fishlock played a key role in helping the Reign recover from ninth place at the halfway point in the season to finish second and claiming a home game in the play off semi final.

They lost out on finishing in first place and earning the top seed to Richard Gunney’s Portland Thornes.

OL Reign could face off against Angharad James and the North Carolina Courage should they progress past Washington Spirit in their quarter final match.

Jess Fishlock is no stranger to individual awards this season having been named in the NWSL Team of the Month on three separate occasions — in May, August and October.

The inaugural Welsh Centurion has also been named in the league’s Best XI four times — in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.

OL Reign head coach Laura Harvey has been nominated for Coach of the Year and Fishlock’s teammate Alanna Cook has been nominated for Defender of the Year.

Voting for these awards have already opened, and you cast their votes here, before it closes on Tuesday, November 9.

The final round of voting uses a weighted scale of players (50%), owners/GMs/coaches (20%), media (20%) and fans (10%). Winners will be revealed leading up to the NWSL Championship game on November 20.
